H1N1 2009 Vaccination

I went for a check up last week, and asked about the H1N1 vaccination. I was advised by the doctor that vaccinations are generally not recommended for pregnant mothers - not good for the foetus.

yah, i would imagine doctors and gynaes to be more "kiasi" cos they wont want to be answerable for anything that may happen to the foetus ... that's why when i read the report from MOH, i was finding it quite contradictory ...

for now ... i can only wonder whether or not i should take the vaccine ...

It is not advisable to take any vaccinations during pregnancy.

During my pregnancy I was tested not immune to Hepatitis B, but my gynae said that I could only take the vaccination after I have given birth.

hmm... i took the generic flu vaccine when i was 5-6 mths pregnant. both my gynae and the vaccination nurse at tan tock seng hospital okayed it..

also read somewhere that taking the flu shot (the generic one) while in the last few months of pregnancy offers extra protection for the baby's 1st 6 mths after they're born, but i'm not sure how true it is..

not going for the H1N1 though, as i'm now nearing delivery

Dear Ladies,

I have checked the MOH's website, and also checked with my gynae, it is safe and okay for preggy mommy to go for the vaccine.

If I do not remember wrongly, my gynae did mention dat it is okay for the vaccine after your 1st trimester. As I am in my 22nd week now, I am definitely going for the vaccine.

I have found some info, for useful reading from the MOH's website:

Ministry of Health: FAQs

Look under Vaccination, clause no. 14, it is stated:
MOH's Expert Committee on Immunisation has recommended that only women in their 2nd and 3rd trimesters be immunised against Influenza A(H1N1-2009).

Hi mummys,

It is just mind boggling how different GPS and Gynaes have different takes on whether we should go for vaccines or not.

My Gynae (renowned specialist and owns the medical hospital) did not recommend me to take seasonal flu vaccine when I asked him way back 1st trimester. I had a slight cough recently and went to see my GP. Essentially, both the GP and Gynae are not for the H1N1 vaccines because it is an entirely new vaccine and they are not comfortable for us taking it.

The controversy is that while MOH oked for pregnant women, they said children under 18 years are not allowed. Aren't the lil ones in us certainly younder than 18 years? :(
Also, I checked and found that there are in the world a few types available to various governments. Those given all-clear in the US are not the same as those sold to our government by Glaxo. My Gynae said we might not have the latest batch. I tend to concur with him.

In any case, it is individual's decision. I just hate it when things have to be left to luck and that we do not have enough and verified info to make calculated decisions. :( We all want the very best for our lil ones.

Good luck and take care!
